HOME LANGUAGE EDUCATION
EU-ROADMAP
Home Languages
in School
This Roadmap is a guide to implement the European Language Policy stating that all European citizens are able to communicate in minimally three languages: the mother tongue and two additional (European) languages.
This language policy enables mutual understanding and socio-economic collaboration, and celebrates the linguistic and cultural diversity across Europe.
The national school systems are responsible for language learning, and therefore should be tasked with instruction of the mother tongues - home languages - present in their specific contexts. Let non-formal language learning systems support the formal ones, in order to achieve this goal.
This Roadmap provides evidence-based models of Home Language Education, to be adapted by national governments, regional and local authorities and schools. It addresses policymakers, school managers, researchers, educators and families throughout Europe.
